Frequently asked questions

  1. What does Solus Trust do?

Solus Trust is a Federally regulated Trust Company providing estate and trust services—we can be appointed as your executor, trustee, or attorney for property—and can provide support service if you are appointed as executor or trustee and require assistance. We work alongside your Raymond James advisor to ensure your wishes are carried out clearly and professionally.

  1. Can Solus Trust act as my executor?

Yes. Solus Trust can be appointed as your executor or co-executor (alongside a friend or family member). Solus Trust will carry out the administration of your estate and fulfill all the duties and responsibilities of the estate settlement process when the time comes. We ensure your estate is administered according to your wishes, and your heirs have a reputable trust company working to carry out all the steps of your estate administration.

In Québec, the executor is called a liquidator.

  1. Can Solus Trust help if I am named executor?

Yes. Executor support services allow Solus Trust to complete administrative tasks while you retain decision making authority and legal responsibility. This can reduce stress and simplify the process of managing the estates alongside our team of estate administration professionals.

  1. What types of trusts can Solus Trust administer?

Solus Trust can administer a wide variety of trusts, including all types of inter vivos and testamentary trusts. We offer both fiduciary trustee services and agency support for estate and trust services which bring not only technical and reporting experience but, more importantly, impartiality in carrying out the intentions and purpose of the trusts.

  1. Can Solus Trust act under a Power of Attorney?

A trust company in Canada may only act under a Power of Attorney for property, not as an attorney for personal care. Solus Trust can help with this undertaking to manage all aspects of financial administration in the event of loss of capacity. This option is available for clients that also appoint Solus Trust as the executor in their will.

In Québec, a Power of Attorney for property is a mandatary to property.

  1. When should I appoint a professional executor or trustee?

Consider professional support if your beneficiaries have differing needs, you want to ensure continued family harmony, or your chosen executor is unable or unwilling to serve. Or simply to ease the burden from your loved ones during a time of grief. Estate and trust services support your wealth transfer goals to ensure you leave a meaningful legacy.
