Value Diligence

As an advisor it is my job to not only work with you towards your goals, but to ensure the investment companies I buy from are also in line with the values I hold and that you hold as my client.
Recently, I attended a meeting with a fund company to discuss ESG – Environment, Social, Governance and their investments. Within their five stars ESG fund, I noticed that they invested in a company which is the biggest weapons company in the world. Immediately I challenged the senior portfolio manager on how they could have it as part of the ESG portfolio. The portfolio manager gave a number of justifications and expected that it will have great returns. For me, no matter the returns of this company, it is the farthest from ESG. After a great back-and-forth conversation surrounding the investment within that company, the portfolio manager was happy to bring this forward to the fund company to look for an alternative.
As an advisor I work hard to ensure I do my due diligence and that I invest in good companies that are in line with your goals and our values. Not every company is going to be 100 per cent ESG, however, I look at the steps and the direction the companies I invest in are taking towards becoming ESG/more ESG. This is part of how I, as an advisor, am striving to build a better tomorrow for you, your loved ones and the future.
