Women in Finance

When you think of the old boys club, what comes to mind? Perhaps the image of a powerful finance tycoon, sitting in a three-piece suit, sipping on bourbon, and bragging about the excessive returns his portfolio generated.

Here, at Raymond James Qualicum Beach Branch, we are promoting a new investment philosophy that is community focused. Gone are the days of the man of the house managing all the financial decisions. Today couples sit together in our boardroom as partners and plan their futures together.

This Women’s Day, we are reflecting on the role of women in finance. Not only as investors but also as professionals. To get the full story, who better to ask than our dedicated team members.

Bonnie Cyre, Financial Advisor: “I’ve worked in finance since 1986. When I first embarked on my career as an advisor, there were very few women in the industry. That certainly didn’t stop me. I focused on the client’s priorities, generating value, and being the “go-to person” my clients could rely on. Do that consistently and you will build a strong business. Today, I am pleased to be part of the mentorship of emerging advisors as they grow their own businesses.”

Shirley Nellist, Branch Administrator: “My approach to financial services is inspired by my early years working in the service industry. When your job is focused on service, you quickly learn not to stereotype. Everyone is so unique. You realize what’s important is the individual in front of you. What are their concerns and how can you help them with their specific situation, that’s what matters most.”

Debbie Wesnedge, Licensed Financial Advisor Assistant: “I started working in the financial industry in 2006. Back then, out of an office of 12 advisors, only two of them were women. Looking at the industry today… things have definitely changed for the better. Today, I work in an office with four women and three men. It’s great to see women being accepted in the industry because money and investing impacts everyone equally.”

Selene Griffin, Associate Financial Advisor: “Women in the financial services industry are under-represented. I could give you a handful of reasons why, but I’d rather focus on the positive. There are companies who are committed to employing more women. However, making this industry more appealing to women is not enough. Companies also need to encourage professional development to retain women. Raymond James Ltd. is one of those companies. I am proud to say that I am part of a culture that enables women to start and advance their careers in the financial industry”.

Finance is for everyone. If you need a place to discuss your finances, we are here for you.
